HYDRATION: REFRESH, RETHINK, REMEMBER.

Hydration is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Water makes up approximately two thirds of your body weight and has several life sustaining functions including regulating body temperature, lubricating joints, protecting organs, and assisting with nutrient absorption.

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?: The “8 glasses a day” advice is a good place to start but it’s important to adjust your fluid intake based on your lifestyle. You need to drink more water in very hot and cold environments and with physical activity. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to hydrate! Consistently drink water throughout the day. Recognize the following signs of dehydration and act quickly to rehydrate

SIGNS OF DEHYDRATION

– Increased thirst

– Dry mouth

– Fatigue

– Light headedness or headaches

– Dry skin, chapped lips

– Impaired mental focus

 

MAKE HEALTHY HYDRATION CHOICES: Adults generally take in about 400 calories through beverages. Sweetened beverages have surprising amounts of added sugar as shown in the image below. Water and unsweetened beverages are the best choices to stay hydrated.

TIPS TO DRINK MORE WATER:

– Keep a water bottle close to you throughout the day

– Set a water drinking goal

– Infuse your water with citrus or berries for a refreshing twist
