GUWellness Captains

Thinking about becoming a GUWellness Captain?  You don’t have to be a professional athlete, a wellness guru or a fitness buff to be a captain. You just need to be interested and enthusiastic about bringing wellness to Georgetown University faculty and staff.

What does a captain do?
• Pursues their own wellness-related goals with gusto
• Inspires others to take action
• Shares information and ideas on making wellness fun with other captains and colleagues
• Promotes wellness activities, events with their department
• Fosters a culture of wellness at Georgetown University

Specifically…
• Receive advance e-mails regarding GUWellness programs and events
• Promote upcoming GUWellness Fairs, free health screenings and flu shots
• Share ideas for stories, challenges and profiles to be posted to this site
• Start a walking club or other wellness challenge in your department
• Volunteer to sign up other Wellness Captains at Fairs
• Inform departments of online Health Assessment tools and opportunity to win a Day at the Spa

In January 2008, Wellness Captains will be invited to attend a half-day retreat at which they will receive the following:

• An overview of GUWellness: Mind, Body, Soul
• Demonstrations by fitness and wellness professionals on various workplace wellness topics, techniques and exercises
• “Captain Idea Swap” – captains can share their ideas for wellness clubs, activities and initiatives
• Healthy lunch
• Gifts, giveaways and more

As we head into 2008 there will be monthly wellness themes with associated programming. Also, there will be a roving Wellness Clinic that will provide blood pressure screenings and other screenings pertaining to the monthly theme; information and demonstrations; and free seated massage. As a Captain, you will have the opportunity to “host” a lunch-time Wellness Clinic, which includes working with the Office of Faculty and Staff Benefits to secure an appropriate space, promoting the clinic among your department (they’ll get first dibs on the seated massage!), and volunteering on the day of the clinic.

This is really just a starting point. Your feedback and participation will truly help shape this Wellness Captain program.

This is a volunteer position and you are encouraged to speak with your supervisor before participating. There will be two or three meetings each year where captains will come together for training, to share ideas and get inspired; beyond that the amount of time you spend in this capacity is entirely up to you, in consultation with your supervisor.

If at this point you know you’d like to participate, send an email to wellness@georgetown.edu providing the following information:

• Name
• Title
• Department
• Campus Address
• Email
• Phone
• Supervisor

You’ll start receiving GUWellness information soon.
