A Healthy Cardiovascular System Means Healthier Eyes

A healthy cardiovascular system means blood is flowing quickly and efficiently through your body. This is important for your eyes, as well, because your cardiovascular system provides oxygen-rich blood to your eyes and removes waste products produced in the eye’s structure. Many nutrients have the potential to maintain or improve the eye and its function by acting on the cardiovascular system.

Exercising at least three times a week, maintaining a proper weight and eating a heart healthy diet rich in omega-3s, antioxidants and soluble fiber will help improve both heart and eye health. (Consult with your doctor before engaging in any exercise or diet program.)

More and more research shows that risk factors that can indicate or lead to heart damage are also harmful to the eyes. Smoking, obesity and high cholesterol levels put both your heart health and your sight at risk.

By maintaining good heart health with exercise and a healthy diet, you also protect your eye health and proper function. And don’t forget to visit your eye doctor annually or as recommended by your eye care professional. Your heart will thank you.
